SOS Health
Palm Island

SOS Health Foundation was founded by Back-In-Motion physiotherapy clinics to provide allied health (Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Occupational Therapy) to indigenous peoples in Australia. They currently operate a permanent clinic on Palm Island (FNQ) and regular clinics in Arnhem Land (NT).
Sacrifice Or Signifcance (SOS) is a clarion call to encourage people to not just donate but to give of your time and resources to make a difference.
Why are we partnering?
Palm Island was used as a penal colony for Aboriginals in the early 20th century. When Qld police arrested “troublemakers” from elsewhere in the state they would incarcerate them on Palm Island. Over the decades there grew a large population of displaced Aboriginal peoples from many tribes and nations all in the one small place living there against their will, away from their traditional land. Needless to say this created some tension and conflict. The island was the site of much unrest including riots after the death in custody of an aboriginal man in the 2004.
This heritage has meant that the subsequent generations of Aboriginals on the island lack their unique identity and there is very high unemployment on the island.

What are we currently working on?
Every month, the SOS team, in conjunction with local aboriginal elders Uncle Laurie and Aunty Veronica, host cultural walks with the local children, teaching them about ancient traditions and stories. This is to ensure their connection to the past is not lost and help to restore their identity. Every 6 months, they also have an overnight camp, further reinforcing Aboriginal traditions for the children.
Payton Foundation proudly supports this work, as well as the operations of the Physio Clinic providing affordable health care for the locals.
